my day....

....yesterday was very interesting to say the least. at least to me it was; it might have been boring to someone else. but it’s coming to my head in writer’s style so I figure I might as well get it out, or who knows how long it’ll be stuck in there…

every Wednesday morning I make breakfast for me and my mom – like real breakfast, not just cereal or whatever. today I made eggs benedict, only with sausage instead of ham…which made it messy because the sausage was ground up, not in patties. but it tasted terrific! I love hollandaise sauce. tomorrow morning I will polish it off in a breakfast wrap. we need eggs though. it was very humorous: running back and forth between English muffins, poached eggs, sausage, and hollandaise sauce, and trying to focus on my mom reading me LotR and news at the same time. you know that feeling when you realize someone just asked you a question, but you weren’t really paying attention? yeah…
jumped around randomly yelling “the Eagles are coming, the Eagles are coming!” which made me think of Paul Revere and the British.

read some Shel Silverstein which mom got from the library: Don’t Bump the Glump, and danced around with a print-out of Jabberwocky saying obscure things about mome raths. finally brought my math upstairs after geography and tidied my room up. finally realized why my copy of The Queen of Attolia has a picture of a right hand on it – duh. I should’ve gotten that two days ago. I’m not quite firing on all four cylinders this week…

fretted (and sweated) over math for about an hour; I like geometry just fine, but I don’t know that I’ll ever understand trig. it’s just a big mystery when you’re using letters and proportions and sides all together – too much like algebra. but after that I got to work on some Hindi exercises (as if my brain wasn’t already fried haha), which made me feel better. I actually got most of a sentence translated from the Hindi book I bought in India, “The DaVinci Code, a Quest for Answers” by Josh McDowell. something about how many copies sold in the first something-or-other, and how many languages it was translated into. I don’t know, there’s some verb form I haven’t gotten to yet that was confusing me.
random thoughts about things I needed to do during the day kept coming to me, so I made a list of all the places to go when I was out. then I got my stuff together and cleaned up my room, which had become a mess again. :P grilled cheese sandwich for lunch? why not! between trying not to burn that and doing my chores at the same time, I had a very scrambled lunch.

after lunch I left for work, list and everything. yesterday I worked from 1-5, and it was one of those weird shifts where it’s terribly slow for an hour (which seems like three hours), and then twenty people come in all at once and you’re busier than you can handle. but as usual, it was fun. I’m sitting there cutting up lettuce in the back and thinking…”in every root in every tree, there is a different green…” and then comes the fun part with the salad spinner – I discovered that ‘to salad-spin’ is actually a verb. which made me think of Benny and Joon with “salad shooTER!!!!!!” I also learned how to use the orange-juicing machine. if you’re coming to visit me but don’t want a smoothie, get the orange juice. it’s the best orange juice I’ve ever tasted in my whole life. and there’s nothing added at all – it’s just orange juice, fresh-squeezed. due to indecisiveness for the second day in a row, I ended up making more orange juice for my shift drink.
so I got off at 5, only I didn’t because my replacement didn’t show up till 5:30. wah. :( which was actually ok because I got overtime. but then I finally clock out, split the tips with Shannon, and I’m getting ready to make my shift drink when Craig shows up. Craig is one of the leaders at youth group, and he works out at fitness zone, so he said he’d drop into my work sometime and say hi. we talked for like 15 minutes, which was really cool. then I realized that it was like 5:50 and I needed to go…..and then my boss showed up and I had to talk to her. blah blah blah….time to go…….ahhh!!!!! the worst part about my work is that it’s nearly impossible to turn left out of the parking lot onto the highway. I sat there for five minutes with all the blood draining out of my leg to the clutch waiting for a gap, and finally got a tiny little one and managed to peel out very effectively, scattering everything (except the orange juice) that wasn’t bolted down in the car. but if I don’t turn left, then I have to go all the way around to get to the library. it’s really bad planning and they need a light.

anyway, I made it to the library at last and discovered that my dinky little library has no good books on tape. so now I have to figure out a title and put it on hold from somewhere else. *sigh* and they don’t have Jumper yet either. rats. but I did find The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in book form for fifty cents, and bought it since I got more than that in tips! basically they took the movie and – not dramatized it, but the other way around. they literaturized it. and yes stupid computer, that is so a word! I got a library card too. it may come as a great shock to you to learn that not only do I not have a library card, but that the last two I’ve owned have expired on me. the explanation is this – I’ve always used my mom’s card, and never actually needed my own. now that I’m driving and going to the library by myself though, I thought it would be a good idea to get one. so I got one from the mean new branch manager. okay, she may not be mean, but she’s not Marty and Marty left big shoes to fill when she retired. I mean, at the very least they could find someone with a name other than Susan. what a librarian name…..she just seems like the kind of person who is always whispering, and would shush people for speaking any louder than her. but I could be wrong I suppose.

after I got my card and Susan went over ALL the information I already knew about cards and branches and hours and fines in her little schpiel, I finally got out of there and got home as quickly as I could, Switchfoot blaring. luckily my parents weren’t mad that it was almost 7:00, but of course I had called them earlier……anyway, mom had dinner ready and I ate so much because I was really really hungry! (smoothie samples at work will only tide you over so long…) put on the chicken carcass to boil from our chicken last week, so I can make soup on Friday. after dinner I put my stuff away and got changed, and then started on the recipe I’ve decided to use the leftover cream from the sleepover in – Fudgy Chocolate Ganache Brownies. and yes, they’re as sinful as they sound. I got that in the oven and called Anna while my parents watched Jeopardy, painfully aware that I should be practicing piano instead.

“Hello?”
“Hi, you sound tired.”
“Can you call me back when I finish my chemistry experiment?” (this, btw, is currently her life. it’s either chem or driver’s ed or orchestra. it answers every question.)
“Um, why don’t you call me back when you’re done, considering I don’t know when you’ll finish.”
“Oh yeah, ok. but if I don’t call by 8:30 then I probably won’t have time to call at all…”
“Alright, we can talk Friday.” (everyone make mental note, Kacy isn’t available on Thursdays. ever. pretty much.)
“okay, bye.”
“bye.”

*look around vacantly* *glance falls on fountain needing to be fixed for nearly a year* *inspiration and ambition hit*
so I fixed my fountain and it now runs again. like, water actually comes out instead of never making it through the clogged-up filter. but I have WAY too many rocks in the base. you can’t see all the pretty ones cuz there’s too many. I’ll have to fix that. eventually my dad came and helped, because I couldn’t get all the crap out with my non-existent finger nail. so while he did that I filled out my work schedule for the next three months with my mom’s help. and took the brownies out of the oven. the bummer is that I haven’t even used the cream yet because the brownies have to cool completely before I put the ganache on. *sigh* *licks lips* yum yum…I love ganache!

8:50 – Anna calls back. my mom answers, then hands the phone to me. ‘I think it’s Anna. I can’t hear her.’
“Hi.”
“Hi.”
“My phone hates you.”
“I know.”
(we begin most conversations this way. despite the fact that our parents don’t like us using the long distance calling card minutes, we do it anyways because the only alternative is my cell phone, which gets [count ‘em] ZERO bars at my house. so really, all our phones hate each other. on the landline, we have to almost shout to hear each other sometimes. you wouldn’t think it would be so hard to find a quiet place in a big house with only two other people in it….)
“Wow, I didn’t expect you to call so late.”
“I know.”

we carry on with a very intelligent conversation about checking the library for dates and going to the calendar to check out books. I think it’s time for bed.

my parents are watching some Ancient Greece things that my dad wants me to see. never mind that I’ve learned more about Ancient Greece than I care to. oh well, it was pretty interesting. I spent the whole time it was on pulling the chicken off the bones for my soup. soup-making is probably one of the best things I’ve learned from my dad, which he learned from his dad, which he learned from his grandpa……I love it and it’s the best stuff ever. mine will most certainly have dumplings. can’t beat chicken-barley soup with dumplings. plus we have all those leftover herbs from the sleepover cooking to use in the broth. mmmm…. ;)

at last it’s bed time!! this is starting to become my favorite part of the day. round up the cats and get ready for bed. and then…

…I crash.

*sigh* I am not always doing drivers ed, chem, or orchestra. I have to have some time to do latin, too. and practice. aggggggghhh.
